Citi and Emirates NBD Launch 24/7 USD Cross-Border Payments

Emirates NBD has become the first bank to use Citi's 24/7 USD Clearing service, enabling round-the-clock cross-border US dollar payments from the Middle East.

The collaboration allows Emirates NBD to process international USD transfers at any time, including weekends and holidays, eliminating the traditional dependency on US banking hours for dollar settlement. Previously, cross-border USD payments initiated outside American business hours would queue until the next clearing window, creating delays of up to 24 hours or more.

Citi's continuous clearing service operates around the clock, processing payments in real time regardless of when they are initiated. For Emirates NBD's corporate and retail customers, this means USD transfers to international counterparties can settle on the same day, even when sent during Gulf business hours that fall outside the US time zone.

The service addresses a longstanding friction point in international payments. The UAE's position as a major trade and remittance hub means that large volumes of USD-denominated payments flow through its banking system daily, and delays in dollar clearing have been a persistent operational challenge for businesses and individuals.

Emirates NBD's early adoption positions the bank at the forefront of a broader shift toward continuous, 24/7 payment processing that is gradually replacing the batch-based settlement cycles that have defined cross-border banking for decades. Several major banks and payment networks are investing in similar always-on capabilities as global commerce increasingly operates without regard to time zones or banking hours.
