Commercial Bank of Qatar Wins Best Sustainability Initiative for Green Bond
Commercial Bank of Qatar issued a record CHF 260 million green bond to fund sustainable projects - earning our Best Sustainability Initiative Award.
28 October 2024, Doha: We're pleased to recognise Commercial Bank of Qatar (CBQ) with our Best Sustainability Initiative Award.
In September 2024, CBQ issued a record CHF 260 million green bond - a significant milestone for the Qatari banking sector. The proceeds are earmarked for funding sustainable projects, and the issuance was subsequently recognised with a "Best Green Financing Initiative" award from The Asian Banker.
Green bonds are not new in Gulf banking, but the scale and structure of CBQ's issuance stands out. A CHF-denominated green bond from a Qatari bank demonstrates both the sophistication of CBQ's treasury operations and the depth of international investor appetite for Gulf sustainable finance instruments.
CBQ has been steadily building its ESG credentials, and this green bond represents the most visible manifestation of that strategy. In a region where sustainability initiatives are sometimes more aspirational than actionable, CBQ has put real capital to work.
We congratulate CBQ on this achievement and look forward to seeing how the funded projects progress.
