Masraf Al Rayan has caught our attention with the launch of AlRayan Go, a completely revamped mobile banking app developed in partnership with Backbase. Launched in December 2024, AlRayan Go represents a ground-up rebuild rather than an incremental update - the kind of fresh start that few banks are willing to commit to.
What particularly impressed our research team was the focus on customer-centric design. In a market where many banking apps feel like they were designed by engineers rather than for customers, AlRayan Go takes a noticeably different approach. The user experience has been rethought from scratch, with an emphasis on simplicity and task completion.
The choice of Backbase as the underlying platform is also telling. Backbase powers digital banking experiences for several leading Gulf banks (including SNB's NEO platform in Saudi Arabia), and its engagement banking approach aligns well with Masraf Al Rayan's ambitions to differentiate through customer experience.
