Mastercard Accelerates Card Fraud Detection with Generative AI Technology

Mastercard has deployed generative AI technology to double the speed at which it detects potentially compromised payment cards, enhancing its Consumer Fraud Risk solution across its global network.

The upgraded system uses generative AI models to analyse patterns across Mastercard's vast transaction dataset, identifying cards that may have been exposed in data breaches or skimming attacks before they are used fraudulently. By accelerating the detection process, Mastercard said it can alert issuing banks faster, enabling them to block or reissue compromised cards before losses occur.

The deployment builds on Mastercard's earlier launch of Decision Intelligence Pro, a generative AI model designed to assess transaction authenticity in real time. While Decision Intelligence Pro evaluates individual transactions at the point of sale, the Consumer Fraud Risk enhancement operates upstream, identifying compromised card numbers before fraudulent transactions are attempted.

The generative AI models analyse relationships between merchants, transactions, and card numbers to detect compromise patterns that traditional rule-based systems may miss. Mastercard said the technology is particularly effective at identifying sophisticated compromise events where stolen card data is tested with small transactions before being used for larger fraudulent purchases.

Card fraud remains one of the most significant costs borne by the payments industry, with global losses running into billions of dollars annually. Mastercard's continued investment in AI-driven fraud prevention reflects the arms race between payment networks and increasingly sophisticated criminal operations.

The enhanced detection capabilities are being rolled out to all issuing banks on the Mastercard network.
