Mastercard Partners with The BENEFIT Company to Drive Payment Innovation and Financial Inclusion in Bahrain

Mastercard and The BENEFIT Company, Bahrain's national payments infrastructure operator, have signed a memorandum of understanding to co-develop digital payment solutions and advance financial inclusion across the Kingdom.

The partnership aligns with the Central Bank of Bahrain's strategic objectives and will focus on several areas including open banking, digital identity solutions, and next-generation payment experiences. Both organisations said the collaboration aims to modernise Bahrain's payment ecosystem while expanding access to financial services for underserved populations.

BENEFIT operates Bahrain's core payments infrastructure, processing domestic bank transfers, ATM transactions, and electronic bill payments. The company has been progressively expanding into digital services, including its role as an open banking authenticator following an earlier partnership with Tarabut. The Mastercard agreement adds international payment network expertise to BENEFIT's domestic capabilities.

The open banking dimension of the partnership is particularly significant for Bahrain, which has established itself as one of the Gulf's most progressive markets for fintech regulation and innovation. The Central Bank of Bahrain was among the first regulators in the region to create a dedicated regulatory sandbox for fintech companies and has actively encouraged partnerships between established financial infrastructure providers and technology firms.

Mastercard's engagement with BENEFIT reflects the payment network's broader strategy in the Gulf, where it has been building partnerships with national payment infrastructure operators and major banks to embed its services more deeply into regional financial ecosystems.

Financial inclusion remains a policy priority in Bahrain, particularly among the country's substantial expatriate workforce.
