Ooredoo Fintech International has launched walletii in Oman, a mobile money application offering digital wallet services, domestic and international remittances, and bill payments to both Ooredoo and non-Ooredoo customers.
The app represents a significant financial inclusion initiative in Oman, where a large expatriate workforce relies on remittance services to send money to home countries. Walletii's cross-border remittance feature allows users to transfer funds internationally directly from their mobile device, competing with traditional money transfer operators that have historically dominated the corridor.
Walletii operates under a Central Bank of Oman-regulated framework, giving users the assurance that their funds are held within a supervised financial environment. The app supports multiple use cases beyond remittances, including bill payments, merchant payments, and peer-to-peer transfers within Oman.
The decision to make walletii available to non-Ooredoo customers is a notable strategic choice, expanding the app's potential user base beyond the telecom operator's subscriber network. This open approach positions walletii as a general-purpose financial tool rather than a carrier-specific add-on.
Ooredoo Fintech International, a subsidiary of the Ooredoo Group, has been building mobile financial services across several markets in the Middle East and Asia. The Oman launch adds to the company's growing fintech portfolio and responds to rising demand for digital alternatives to cash and traditional banking channels in the Sultanate.
The launch comes as Oman's regulators have been actively encouraging digital payment innovation as part of the country's economic diversification efforts.
