QNB Group Receives Central Bank of Egypt Licence to Launch Digital Bank 'ezbank'

QNB Group has received a licence from the Central Bank of Egypt to launch ezbank, a new digital bank that will use mobile-first platforms and AI-driven tools to expand financial access in the country.

The Egyptian licence marks QNB's entry into the digital-only banking space in one of the Middle East's largest markets by population. Egypt has over 100 million residents, with banking penetration that remains relatively low compared to Gulf states, presenting a significant opportunity for digital banking to reach underserved populations.

ezbank will operate as a standalone digital bank targeting Egyptian consumers with accessible, app-based financial products. QNB said the platform will leverage AI-driven tools for customer onboarding, credit assessment, and personalised product delivery, enabling it to serve customers at lower cost than traditional branch-based banking.

The Central Bank of Egypt has been developing its regulatory framework for digital banks as part of broader financial inclusion objectives. QNB's licence is among the first to be granted under this framework, positioning ezbank as an early mover in Egypt's emerging digital banking market.

QNB Group, the largest financial institution in the Middle East and Africa by assets, already operates conventional banking services in Egypt through its subsidiary QNB Alahli. The launch of ezbank as a separate digital brand allows the group to target a different customer segment without disrupting its existing Egyptian operations.

The Egyptian digital banking market is expected to attract additional entrants as the regulatory framework matures.
